5 reasons why you should read the book ‘I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual’ by Luvvie Ajayi
Hola Estrellitas! It has been a while since I actually went to the Barnes and Noble store and bought a book. There really hasn’t been anything that piqued my interest or worth me taking the trip. I know some of you might be thinking, taking the trip? What about Amazon? LOL…Well, I’m old school and I like the experience of going to the store and buying a book.
I have been following award-winning blogger, activist, pop-culture critic and professional troublemaker (like she calls herself) Luvvie Ajayi for a while now. Her blog Awesomely Luvvie is super popular and If you haven’t read her Game of Thrones recaps then you are missing out big time. Anyways, when she announced that she was writing a book, I knew that I was going to buy it, not only to support her but also because I love her style of writing and her way of thinking. I read the book in like 3 days, I just couldn’t put it down.
I don’t normally write book reviews but I had to share this with you guys because I loved it that much. Here are 5 reasons why you should read “I’m Judging you: The Do-Better Manual” by Luvvie Ajayi, without giving too much away because you all really need to buy it and read it.
#1- Part 1 “Life” Chapter 2: Why must you suck at Friendship? This was one of my favorite chapters, not only did I laugh out loud, but I can also relate, I think everybody can. We all have that one friend that could fit into the categories she describes in the book at some point in our lives. You might be one of those friends yourself, right now!! and you don’t even know it, that’s why you must read it.
#2-Part 2 “Culture” Chapter 7: Racism is for Assholes Racism has always been part our culture, there are people who are just simply not going to like you because of the color of your skin or because that is what they have been taught. I didn’t know what racism was until I moved to the United States in 1993, I was 17 at the time and people started calling me “Red Bone”. I had no idea what that meant, I was clueless. Let’s just say, I am almost 40 now and a lot has happened since then. You must read this chapter to understand why “Racism is not always about white hoods and burning crosses”, for real.
#3-Part 2 “Culture” Chapter 8: The Privilege Principle How do you explain to your white friends what white privilege means? Just buy Luvvie’s book, highlight this chapter and let them read it. I couldn’t have explain it any better.
#4-Part 2 “Culture” Chapter 9: Zamunda is not a Country, Neither is Africa My husband is from the continent of Africa, he is from the country of Ghana. We can both relate so much to this chapter because we both have been asked the same questions. Are there cars in Ghana? Are there Lions running wild around the streets? Do you have electricity there? LOL..seriously guys, it’s time to pack your bags, travel more and see the world. But first, read Luvvie’s book.
#5-Part 3 “Social Media” Social Media is part of our lives now. When we wake up, the first thing we do is check our Facebook or our Instagram accounts, even before we check our email. I don’t see social media going anywhere but like anything, there are rules and we must learn some Net-etiquette. Luvvie is laying down the rules in this chapter and everyone is gonna learn today…(in my Kevin Hart voice).
There were so many things that I liked about this book, too many to mention but I would just like to say that reading this book has definitely made me a better person and a better writer. I also learned that I have a voice. Not that I didn’t know that before but I know now that I need to use it for good, like Luvvie said: “Do Something that Matters”.
I must leave a mark in this world and she has inspired me to do so. I hope that you pick up this book and read it, and that it inspires you , just like it inspired me. I also hope to meet Luvvie someday in person and tell her how much this book has meant to me.
Have you read her book? What did you think of it? Which one was your favorite chapter? Let’s chat! Leave your comments in the comments section down below.
