Hola Estrellitas! This week’s 5 questions interview is with none other than Dominican Plus Size Model & Blogger Christina Mendez. Born and raised in New York City to Dominican parents, one fun fact about Christina that you may not know is that she is the grand-daughter of Merengue King Joseito Mateo. Her long list of clients include: BET, Ashley Stewart, Sofia Vergara for Kmart, Kohl’s, Maggy London, Qristyl Fraizer Designs, Cyberswim, PLY Apparel, Rue 107 and more. Her motto is “curves can be marketable and sexy”.
Check out our exclusive interview with this exotic beauty below.
1-How did you get started in Modeling?
My “story” is unconventional. I began modeling a few years after my son was born. As many women can understand, I felt like I lost my way once my son was enrolled in school…I didn’t know what to do with myself. So, I stepped out on faith and participated in BET’s Rip The Runway Model Search in 2008 and to my surprise I was selected as one of their first plus-size models that year.
2-What are your favorite plus size brands or designers? My style is a mix of casual, trendy with a dash of sexy. I like to mix my basics with a trendy piece or two. I don’t have a favorite brand or designer. I have a wide range of places to shop: Fashion to Figure, Ashley Stewart, Forever 21, Macy’s and local boutiques.
3-What advice would you give to any up and coming plus size model?
On my website, www.christinamendez.com/blog I offer free tips to aspiring models…from where to get your own gigs to what to wear at a casting. Like any career change you need to educate yourself and guess what? The internet is your friend, use it. Read articles and blogs related to the industry, follow models and industry experts on social media outlets so you can be aware of any upcoming castings or events, be prepared to network and lastly get ready to work hard to make your dreams come true.
4-Tell us about any upcoming projects and how can we follow your journey?
I have a few projects in the works that I am extremely excited to share. Please stay tune for the announcements on my social media accounts. This year I am also pushing myself to be bicoastal. As a freelance model this will be a fun journey to watch J. Catch all the fun on my IG Stories @modelchristinamendez.
5-We like to end our interviews by asking for a favorite quote, what is yours?
“It’s nice to embrace the beauty within you.” It’s great to be photogenic and look great on a runway but it’s better to make folks feel inspired, motivated, and loved. I am a stronger believer that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.
